2013 Report Card – @Channel9, @GEMchannel, @GOchannel, Extra

It was the year they almost did it. Nine have been surging through 2013 with some big programming results and their NewsCAFF product has more than become competitive again, regularly winning in SYD & MEL and taking it to the line in BNE. They've purchased ADL & PER from WIN so that now the Network is truly national for the first time (ahead of the company's launch on the stock exchange before Christmas). All this on top of the sad loss earlier this year of Peter Harvey, one of Nine's more iconic journalists. Nine are doing their darndest to take it to Seven and while that worked for a fair chunk of the year they also had their share of missteps too. Another year that their report card is one they can be proud of... HITS The Voice Australia - It returned and more than did its job for Nine again this year. A massive result again … [Read more...]

Wednesday Night Fever - Cast

Time for another episode of the all too oft-ignored "Best Podcast Ever About TV". This week Josh and I shoot the breeze on: the ongoing-but-hopefully-over saga surrounding Melissa Doyle departing Sunrise; The shows that haven't been a success that the Networks wished you cared more about; a whole raft of new shows coming your way - including THE NEWSROOM and GREAT AUSTRALIAN BAKE OFF; and Ten Watch returns to fill you on on everything (and there's a lot!) that's going on with that Network you hardly watch that's about to relaunch itself to try and get you to watch it. Make sense? There's also some random pussy too (thank YOU, Mrs Slocum!). Feel free to get in touch with either of us louts who hold court on the podcast - Josh (@JoshuaWithers) or me (@MolksTVTalk). Review the podcast and its shoddy audio on iTunes, or simply swing … [Read more...]

Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story of INXS - Cast

1. INXS get re-cast & re-made. A drama about one of the biggest Aussie bands ever? Well it *could* work, but only if you had the support of the surviving members of the band and the casting managed to find actors that look like the original six members. Somehow, Shine Australia did it all. Luke Arnold (Winners & Losers, City Homicide) will star as Michael Hutchence, newcomer Nicholas Masters is Tim Farriss, Ido Drent (Offspring, Shortland Street) is Jon Farriss, Andy Ryan (Underbelly: Squizzy Taylor, Reef Doctors) is Andrew Farriss, Alex Williams (Underground: The Julian Assange Story) is Kirk Pengilly and Hugh Sheridan (Packed to the Rafters) is Garry Gary Beers, while Damon Herriman (The Sullivans, Love My Way) is the band’s manager, CM Murphy. It also registers that Hugh Sheridan is no longer part of the Ten talent … [Read more...]

…Because you can’t get there by bus (@hamishandandy’s Caravan of Courage #AUvNZ)

Contractual obligations aside, Hamish & Andy's Gap Year series two delivered a strong result for Channel 9 and the boys returning to Australia to deliver a two part series across Australia & New Zealand to see out the ratings year in the Sunday night Big Brother slot will be a smart move (though they are unlikely to beat Sunday Night). Still - self-deprecating fun! From the press release: Hamish and Andy love nothing more than a good ol’ fashion adventure – a passion that has seen them spending years lifting up the most far-flung corners of the globe. But one region has escaped their unskilled eye … until now. In two 90-minute specials on Channel Nine (Sunday, November 11, and Sunday, November 18, at 6.30pm) Hamish and Andy will rev up the old caravan and courageously drive the length of New Zealand and the breadth of Australia to … [Read more...]

Hamish & Andy's Euro Gap Year

This week there's so much to cover as Olympic fever grips Foxtel and Channel 9 (and most of London). What are Channel 7 and Channel 10 doing with their schedules for the next two weeks? Is THE SHIRE as bad as every makes out, and how is LARA BINGLE any better? Why do people keep asking obvious questions? I roped in Josh (@JoshuaWithers) to discuss this and a whole lot more including: THE TODAY SHOW's important role in Ch9's Olympic coverage; the demise of TRICKY BUSINESS; a new host for CAN OF WORMS; what KATE RITCHIE is doing now; why the ABC is replaying PAPER GIANTS; why DOWNTON ABBEY and REVENGE were massive hits (and why prime time soap opera works so well); the end of MASTERCHEF AUSTRALIA season 4; and what we think HAMISH & ANDY's next move is post the final episode of their second series of the GAP YEAR programs this … [Read more...]

Dumb, Drunk & Racist

*** IMPORTANT: Something went wrong when we recorded the first segment - it's clippy and clicky and sounds horrible. I'll have to work it out before next week so that it doesn't happen again, but every other segment is fine, so please hang in there. *** The biggest week in the last couple of years for Channel 9 played out as expected this week when THE VOICE AUSTRALIA delivered massive ratings and at least 4 new singing stars. The business of The Voice has been massive and the win has certainly changed the life of Karise Eden who now has a recording contract and a life that is about to be very regimented through appearances and performances. Lots of other things happened which is why we talk about them too, including the launch of DUMB, DRUNK & RACIST and we include our thoughts and and interview with host Joe Hildebrand for your … [Read more...]

Andrew Gunsberg - Photo Finish

WHAT A WEEK! If State Of Origin Game 2 isn't enough, there's an incredible list of other new shows starting up this week. The premiere of Mabo on Sunday is an amazing telemovie documenting the life of Eddie Mabo starring Jimi Bani and Deborah Mailman. Tim Allen's new sitcom Last Man Standing premieres on free-to-air television on Channel 10 and it's not bad - not great, but not bad. Myf Warhurst's Nice, all about 80's pop culture, starts on Wednesday, as does the UK comedy Life's Too Short starring Warwick Davis and Ricky Gervais. Andrew Gunsberg appears on ABC1 with Photo Finish and Hamish & Andy's Euro Gap Year kicks off on Thursday too - will it improve on last year's US Gap Year? Oh, and Being Lara Bingle premiere's this week. You decide. MOLK PICKS The Block - Sun 6:30pm/Mon-Fri 7pm, Ch9 Last Man Standing (series … [Read more...]

Hamish & Andy's Euro Gap Year

After an underwhelming start it found it's feet once the stars spent more time out of the studio. With Hamish & Andy's Euro Gap Year the boys in question will be out and about more often which will make all the difference. How funny it will be is up to Hamish & Andy. We'll be watching, if only to get the answer to the question about his "timeslot tatt" from last year - different time in 2012, so has it changed? From the press release: After immersing themselves in American culture last year, Hamish and Andy have decided you can never stop learning and it would therefore be irresponsible not to take another gap year in 2012. The Nine Network’s new series, Hamish and Andy’s Euro Gap Year, will feature the boys’ travels and adventures throughout Europe and be broadcast weekly from The Lord Stanley, a disused pub in East London. … [Read more...]

Adam Zwar

Welcome to the business end of the first portion of the 2012 ratings year - nearly time to breathe a sigh of relief and eat some chocolate. Before we do that though, there's lots to discuss and dissect, not least of which the 2012 Logies nominations and the surprises contained therein (Hamish Blake nominated for the Gold Logie?! Surely you jest, TV Week?). There's a bunch of shows ending and a whole lot of others starting so grab a beverage and settle into the usual sparkling repartee you've come to expect from SteveMolk & Josh. On this week's show: THE SHIRE laps up the controversy. (1:34) It's the final week of 2012 MOLKIES voting! (10:29) The LOGIES nominations are out, with pre-requisite surprises. (15:55) Ch10 shunt YOUNG TALENT TIME out of Super Sunday. (25:05) HAMISH & ANDY head off for their Euro Gap Year. … [Read more...]

Hamish & Andy's Gap Year

We all knew it was coming. We all knew it was gonna be in the UK and likely into Europe. What we all didn't know was that it "consistently won it's timelsot" - and for 9 of the 10 weeks it aired in 2011, it did. It will indeed be interesting to see what shenanigans the boys get up to, especially in light of Hamish's Gold Logie nomination. Those deep pockets at Channel 9 will certainly provide lots of opportunity...
