Congratulations Dicko – Winner of #CelebApprentice 2012

Celebrity Apprentice Australia 2012

A teary Ian "Dicko" Dickson was last night crowned the winner of Celebrity Apprentice Australia 2012. Mark Bouris decided Dicko was to be hired (though he didn't say that) after the former music executive presenter the better recording and film clip of a song he and finalist Nathan Jolliffe co-wrote in the penultimate challenge in the previous episode. Dicko takes the crown from 2011 winner Julia Morris, and in a generous gesture split the $100,000 prize destined for his charity with Jolliffe. The finalists were joined by past contestants of this series and the 2011 seris, with Dicko's "Angels" - Tania Zaetta, Patti Newton & Jesinta … [Read more...]

New web series offers “Humanity’s Last Hope” (@NewEdenSeries)

New Eden

ex-pat Aussie Brett Snelgrove describes his new web series NEW EDEN as a show that "will appeal to South Park and sci-fi fans alike. And anyone who wants to see cool frick’n monsters make grown men poo their pants”. It doesn't hurt that it's hilarious to boot. Set to launch online later in May, NEW EDEN follows the adventures of bickering odd couple Murray and Hamilton, two starship crewmen marooned and fighting for their lives on a primordial world after their starship crash lands on the wrong planet! It's an off-kilter take on your usual science-fiction story and one with an earthiness and integrity only a web series can offer (short … [Read more...]

MolksTVTalk – Out Of Office

Canadian & American flags

My day job gets in the way sometimes. ;) I'll be in Canada and the United States of America for the next two weeks, with limited ability to watch any Australian TV, so the number of stories will thin out a little while I'm away. We'll still keep you across the finale of The Biggest Loser Australia, the launch of season four of MasterChef, the ongoing juggernaut that is The Voice Australia, and the daily ratings as they come to hand. If there's a story pop-up and a press release attached, we'll publish it here. I'll also be keeping a number of radio spots while I'm away, so keep your ears peeled for me on your local radio over the next two … [Read more...]

Something to Randling about (#Randling @RandlingHQ)

Randling

Randle. n. “A nonsensical poem recited by Irish schoolboys as an apology for farting at a friend.” Andrew Denton was never going to return to our screens for "just some show". It had to be special, it had to be different. Randling is certainly special and different - it's just not a show you can sit down and mentally switch off to watch. The best parts of the show are that it makes you think. An intelligent host, intelligent guests and parlour games based around words - let's face it, it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea. But for those that choose to hang in and be entertained there's some comedy gold in both the games and the … [Read more...]

New Show Chaos (surviving the coming week of the 2012 ratings year)

Random TV's

With the ratings season starting up again this Sunday with Week 8 (Week 16 for 2012), so begins the biggest battle of reality television we've seen in some time. It's not just a little bit - every commercial channel has it, with at least one network dedicating almost the entire evening on multiple nights to various reality formats. As I'm really helpful, I've prepared this guide for the coming week so you know what's on when and what you might want to avoid. HINT: If you don't like reality TV, your decision will pretty much be made for you already. SUNDAY With two big formats launching - one new (The Voice Australia on Ch9), one in its … [Read more...]

Coming Very Soon (PVRs at the ready!)…

Bikie Wars: Brothers In Arms

After the Easter non-ratings period, it all begins. All the shows that networks have been teasing us with promos for kick off. But now they're here - you best be prepared. There's a dearth of reality TV coming (if you're into that sort of thing); there's some amazing new drama; and then there's the pinnacle televised awards event in the Australian TV landscape. There's lots coming - these shows listed are but the higher profile ones - so settle in, people. What are you gonna be watching? (Me? Pretty much all of it.) The Voice What: The latest reality singing format "smash hit" from the US transmuted to an Australian format. The hook is … [Read more...]

Sorkin’s The #Newroom – coming not soon enough to a screen near you…

Jeff Daniels - The Newsroom

The man responsible for The West Wing has turned his hand to network news with his latest series, to screen on HBO in the United States from June 24. The Newsroom looks to pull no punches and sets up lead Jeff Daniels to be everything we need in a news anchor - egotistical, intelligent and a little bit broken/jaded. Sam Waterston adds gravitas, and Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) will no doubt bring a wide-eyed innocence. Given it's two months away from airing in the US there's no word as to who will get it in Australia but every network (free-to-air and subscription) is already jockeying for position. Keep your eyes peeled for more trailers … [Read more...]

McDonald’s Gets Hit With A Limp Lettuce Leaf

McDonald's Gets Grilled

"McDonald's have funded the following independently produced program 'McDonald's Gets Grilled'." If the disclaimer didn't set you straight, then by the introduction of the premise you should have guess this was one big ad. And WHAT an ad! Take six sceptics from the general public, heavily vetted and pre-screened, and present them with what is essentially a cooking program premise. Then spin the tables on them by telling them they are responsible for 'investigating' McDonald's Australia to see how they really measure up to market expectations. Host Steve Liebmann insisted in his intro it was a "bold experiment, one which will rock the … [Read more...]

The Hits and Misses of 2012 – January to March

Country Town Rescue

So very much has happened in such a little space of time. Now that we're at the Easter break of the 2012 ratings season, it's reasonable we take stock and have a look at what the networks have offered up so far this year. Not everyone has a My Kitchen Rules or Revenge in their back pocket to drop out and pillage the ratings at will. In fact, if we learned nothing else in the last 3 months, nobody other than Channel 7 does. There's been a lot of TV come and go and while some metaphorical cream has risen to the top, some other cream has been weighed down by the larger metaphorical clot of cream that has overtaken the top of the glass, … [Read more...]

Interview with Kick Gurry (#Tangle)

Kick Gurry & Justine Clarke - Tangle

In Season 3 of Tangle this revelatory drama will pull apart and look at just how the generations separate from one another and how the ties of family are stretched. Kick Gurry's Joe finds himself in a unique place. Ally (Justine Clarke) has moved her family to a rambling old rental property by the sea. Her financial need to return to the workforce prompts a surprising offer from Joe, which brings to question what Ally wants from him and from Gabriel (Matt Day). Christine's fear that her family is dissolving is confirmed when Max announces he's moving in with Nat. Romeo shares Charlotte's distressing secret and Gigi enjoys having a … [Read more...]
