It is upon us. The Summer non-ratings period begins today. Traditionally this is a time of contempt for viewers – the networks offering us tripe and expecting us to kiss their butts by way of thank you. With a whole raft of extra channels available to us with digital multi-channelling, many would be inclined to think the primary channels will have nothing to show as that’s where all their usual Summer content has been ferreted away to – and normally you’d be right (as was the case in 2009/2010).

With the struggle between 7Two, 7mate, GO! & GEM hotting up, the pressure is on the primary channels to still perform. Delivery is key, and while we’ll see some shows rest so they can work on their tan, the breakfast battle typifies the relationships the networks are working through – both will continue to broadcast in their slot, seeking to attract additional viewers or those looking for a change. The hosts for both Sunrise and Today may be taking a break, but it won’t be all at the same time as Karl, Lisa, Kochie & Mel all continue to work hard this Summer. This is setting the tone for an interesting time this Dec-Jan television period.
