I’m not usually so moved that I choose to express myself in such a manner, but this was personal.
Ever since I heard Jamie Durie was coming back to Channel 9 to host Top Design, I was keen to see the show. There’d been some success with the format in the US, and it would likely translate well into the Australian market. Then Channel 9 delivered the promo for the show, and people across the country looked at each other like they’d been slapped in the face with a soiled nappy. Yeah, that kind of nose-crinkling.
I submit this video response for your consideration as to the direction taken to promote Top Design. And I apologise in advance for the excessive use of “air quotes”.
Molks, I could be the minority, but I really like the promo. It’s catchy… explains the show… and gives the impression that it’s a safe show that I can watch with my children.
The core issue is that it doesn’t really address what the show is – is it a competition? Is it simply a design thing where everyone feels good about themselves. Sure it’s fun, but that seems to be lacking with any of the sensibility of the show. I’ve no problem if people like it – I just hope people tune in to the show and aren’t put off by the promo.
Dear Mr Molk
You are a genius (unlike Jamie Durie and the muppets who made that promo)
Steve…gold!
