Ten Evening News tries something new

TEN Tweets

It came with little fanfare (really only a couple of tweets from host Bill McDonald), however this week the Queensland edition of Ten Evening News decided to try something new. McDonald was in a holding pattern between his 5pm news-reading duties and the 6:30pm program on Tuesday 15/03/11 and fired off a tweet asking for questions for Professor John Bell who he was to interview regarding the nuclear meltdown in Japan as a result of the tsunami. They sadly ran out of time to fire the questions at Prof Bell, however they did hold the questions over to the Wednesday 16/03/11 program: On the whole it was pretty slick, and good on Channel 10 … [Read more...]

@theTodayShow #9stream

The Today Show #9stream event

Another great #9stream event was held last Thursday (04/03/11) with the entire cast of the Today Show. All of them - Karl (eventually), Lisa, Georgie, Ben, Richard W, Richard R, & "Lil" Stevie Jacobs. An impressive behind the scenes Q&A session, hosted as always by an impeccable Rob McKnight. It's a deliciously light and unguarded chat with the team, and having the questions supplied by viewers provides a voice into the team with an access they normally they don't get (DISCLAIMER: I get a question at 29:10). During the process I also live tweeted the event using the hashtag #9stream, and towards the end as Rob goes into the control … [Read more...]

The Today Show's Live 9stream

Running off the back of the last 2 very successfule livestream events, this next event from Channel 9 will feature the the team from the Today Show, and they're calling for your input and questions now. You can either tweet a question using the #9stream hashtag, or go to the Facebook fan page and leave your comment as a question there. Host Rob McKnight has delivered many enjoyable and informative segments through the 9NewsAustralia YouTube Channel, and his hosting duties for the livestreams have also been spot on. Focusing on the brekky TV and all that surrounds it is quite timely, give the ease with which these light entertainment shows … [Read more...]

My Kitchen Rules live tweeting – conceded pass

Live Tweets from My Kitchen Rules 23/02/2011

It was a last minute call to arms for those that watch My Kitchen Rules & live tweet the show - the producers would be including a "selection" of tweets during the elimination portion of the show. Manu let the faithful know via his tweetstream: A bold and intriguing move. No noise had been made about this prior to Manu's tweet (press releases aside). That the episode was planned to be 90 minutes anyway (final instant restaurant, first elimination cook-off) had challenged Biggest Loser: Families to extend their episode to 90 minutes also, so this late tweet inclusion meant that the maniacal masses - yours truly included - would tune … [Read more...]

“Channel 9 would like to apologise to all viewers…”

An apology from Channel 9

While the production of television and who wins the ratings (and therefore the right to charge the most for the advertising dollar) is a very serious business, it's also about ego and a bit of fun. It's even better when that ego and fun cross over into a nice, sharp dig at the competition. Playful? Sure. Sincere? You bet. Self promoting? With two sugars, thanks. The news game is cut-throat - the first out with the pictures wins. We saw that during Tropical Cyclone Yasi when Sunrise's Grant Denyer was reporting via Skype from an iPhone the morning after the event had passed and there was no power other than in mobile phone towers. So, … [Read more...]

#9LiveStream 2 – From Brisbane

Ch9 LiveStream 2

I was lucky enough to be present at the broadcast of Channel 9's second LiveStream event, sitting in the studio at the back and wandering around taking some shots and making a general nuisance of myself. It was tons of fun. Rob McKnight did a great job hosting the event, asking the questions of Brisbane newsreaders Andrew Lofthouse (Brisbane's own Silver Fox) & Melissa Downes, Adelaide newsreader Michael Smyth, 9 Brisbane News Director Lee Anderson & tech crosses from Mitch Wall. Being in the studio for the recording was quite weird, as everyone else (except the autocue guy) had an earpiece or headphones on and when they crossed to … [Read more...]

The Today Show Australia Day 2011 OB

The Today Show logo

It had all the makings of a perfect Australia Day celebration: a free BBQ, free entertainment, celebs about the place for photos and autographs, 5 radio stations setup for their own outside broadcast (OB), and a major network television breakfast program broadcasting live with performances and the general business of the show. All it needed was some sun and lots of people - and it got lots of both. My entire family went in, arriving at Suncorp Stadium at 5am local time to see the crowd slowly building, to see rehearsals and to enjoy the festivities. Lots of good people to talk with - always great to see Andrew Lofthouse and Melissa Downes … [Read more...]

My Trip to QTQ9 Brisbane (by SteveMolk, age 37)

Ch9 Livestream 2

Today I went to the Channel 9 studios in Brisbane. It was fun. I saw many good things about making TV happen, like the control room and the security guard at the front gate. His name was George and he was nice. I met Rob McKnight and he was nice. He introduced me to some people and I stood in the back of the control room during the recording of 9 News Brisbane and watched them broadcast the News. It was very busy but calm but people were talking a lot. There were a lot of screens. I saw the news readers on the screen during the broadcast of the news and during the ad breaks when they do not use their serious voices. The newsreaders were … [Read more...]

Nine’s 2nd LiveStream – Live from Brisbane!

Channel 9's LiveStream2

After the success that was the first LiveStream event, the team at Channel 9 responsible for such things have scheduled another - this time in my home town of Brisbane! It was to be last week, however the floods and the coverage therein put as massive dent in that with some members of the Ch9 team pulling some massive hours to get all the different shows & special footage to air. But it has not been forgotten, and Rob McKnight will be hosting this second interactive event from the QTQ Mt Coot-tha studios from 7pm AEST on Tuesday 25 January. Featuring Brisbane News anchors Andrew Lofthouse and the lovely Melissa Downes, as well as the … [Read more...]

Old media vs new media – a snapshot

Old Media vs New Media

The debate will rage for eons. As soon as 'new media' becomes 'standard media', something 'new-er' will appear making it 'old media'. For now, the debate is about the effectiveness of Twitter/Facebook/YouTube/Quora/SomethingElse and how they do/do not affect or alter the current traditional media and the way we consume it. 'Old media' snobs look down at anyone within their ranks that involves themselves in these new mediums, claiming they're lazy. The new kids (& old ones too!) that have embraced social media are finding it helps them with their sourcing and development of stories. As more and more politicians, companies and … [Read more...]
