Having fought off the green-eyed monster at the time when all my Sydney-based friends were off to see Stephen Fry perform his one man chat/show at the Sydney Opera House, I was well pleased that ABC1 decided to share it all with us. The resultant show was brilliant.
It was everything I hoped it to be, and more. Mr Fry was witty, whimsical and welcomed all on a journey with him across topics as diverse as his manic depression, his first teaching gig, credit card fraud, how he met Hugh Laurie & the joy of the conversion rate of the Australian dollar. He was incredibly quick, & effervescent in his delight at being able to hold court with 2,500 Fry fans in one of the great performance halls of the world. The last 25 minutes became a chat with Jennifer Byrne, host of the First Tuesday Book Club & one not unaware of what it’s like to deal with a modern day genius (being the owner of Mr Andrew Denton).
In watching it last night I could see why those that went raved about it. Lucky bastards. Sublime.
If you somehow missed it, you can view it online here courtesy Aunty. Not sure for how long – hopefully forever. DVD likely available soon.
