ABOUT. TIME.
Not every character will move you but it’s a solid series with some good drama that doesn’t complete fall down the “here comes the guy who will be such-and-such a character, let’s see what he does” scenario. It’s lots of good, dark fun.
From the press release:
Gotham, the gripping new drama series about the city that spawned the world’s most notorious super villains, premieres with a movie length episode on Sunday, October 12 at 8.30pm on Channel Nine.
Adding a new chapter to the history of the original city of sin, Gotham is the origin story of Batman as well as the evil doers that he rose to fight against.
The series charts the early days of many of the characters who will go on to become some of DC Comics’ most renowned, enduring villains. They include a teenaged Selina Kyle, the future Catwoman (Camren Bicondova); a young Edward Nygma, the future Riddler (Cory Michael Smith); and Oswald Cobblepot, The Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor).
Before the Caped Crusader emerged as the hero we know him to be today, one of his greatest allies was already fighting the criminals and corruption that riddled the city – James Gordon (Ben McKenzie), a man synonymous with law and order and one of the crime world’s greatest foes.
Partnered with the brash but shrewd police legend Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue), Gordon is called to their first case, the most high-profile crime committed in Gotham City – the murder of billionaires Thomas and Martha Wayne.
At the gruesome murder scene they meet the sole survivor, the couple’s hauntingly intense, 12-year-old son Bruce (David Mazouz), with whom Gordon feels a strong kinship. Moved by the boy’s terrible loss, the young detective vows to find out who killed his parents.
As he navigates the often underhanded politics of Gotham’s criminal justice system, Gordon encounters imposing gang boss Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) and the many colourful and dangerous characters that call Gotham home.
Gotham is written and produced by Bruno Heller (The Mentalist, Rome).
