Channel 10's BREAKFAST is settling in; no one really knows (or necessarily cares) what's happening with EXCESS BAGGAGE; and there's still a lot of programming that people are wondering where it's gonna fit in. The AFL is but a couple of weeks away and Channel 7 are poised to make the most out of that, and BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS has some competition in THE LIVING ROOM on Ch10 which has started filming. The 84th Academy Awards

Ten has set a precedent for premature program launch-ulation. The Biggest Loser, Young Talent Time, Homeland, and at least a couple have paid off. Tomorrow was meant to signal the first episode of their new morning news/light entertainment program Breakfast though it launched on Thursday last week to capitalise on the developments happening with the Federal Labor leadership. Did it pay off? Not necessarily in the ratings... though this is a marathon, not a sprint. What a first week of ratings. Channel 7 sees Revenge & My Kitchen Rules both rating through the roof. Excess Baggage falls through the floor on GO!, while dependables like Sherlock and CSI don't break one million - the ODI Cricket providing the only relief for the network. The Biggest Loser Australia rates lower than The Renovators did and is seen as a "success". Everything's crazy, but you can depend on Revenge and MKR delivering again for Ch7 this week. IT'S RATINGS TIME, BABY!!! We've already got one casualty for the year already and there's sure to be more quickly. Lots of shows that have been sizzled for weeks during sporting fixtures about to drop, and we start to settle into some form or order. Can you tell it's the last week of the summer non-ratings period? No? Neither can the programmers at the networks, to be fair, though the best indication is that the ABC bring back a host of their regular programming in the week before the ratings season starts proper - so here we are. There's a dribble of additional Ch10 shows returning, but still no sign of a proper schedule from Ch9... because the cricket is still in the way, which rates pretty good, though the other networks get the jump of forming viewer habits with their shows. At least 16 new or returning shows this week, and with the tennis finally getting out of the way we can start to see how some shows get to line up head-to-head. With The Biggest Loser struggling last week and now meeting Excess Baggage directly at 7pm, with both crossing over at 7:30pm to compete with My Kitchen Rules it a reality-fest we've not seen from the commercial networks before. The finals week of the Australian Open. Channel 10's Super Sunday. Home and Away returns to our screens. I guess two out of three ain't bad. Welcome to week four of 2012 and still three weeks out from the start of the ratings season proper - with it comes the start of Ch10's new programming strategy and all the joy of new shows, returning series, and some networks flat out struggling to keep up (eh, Channel 9?). Here we are, preparing for a whole raft of new shows to launch 3 weeks ahead of schedule. So this week there's shows finishing... it feels like television purgatory. What's better is that in Channel 10 forcing the hands of all the other networks by launching early it means the others have to follow suit. Delicious. Once Upon A Time In Cabramatta

If you watch nothing else this week - and there is quite a bit on, what with Flood anniversary pieces and the Cricket and Tennis and so forth - tune on Thursday night to see Kevin Costner and Andy Garcia's first ever film performances, with ONE screening The Untouchables at 8:30pm. It's brilliant, and Robert De Niro & Sean Connery's performances only add to the drama. Spectacular film score from Ennio Morricone... it's my favourite film of all time. ENJOY! HAPPY NEW YEAR! It's bright, it's shiny, and all those promos talking about new programs coming in 2012 means we'll hopefully see them this year (we're all looking at you, Episodes). Nonetheless the first week of the year has brought with it some new offerings and some good repeats of existing shows. There's also two Tennis tournaments (ONE and 7Two) and the Cricket (Ch9) so summer finally pays off for sporting fans too.
