Stunning news out of the ASTRA Awards that Wentworth S02 is not long away – even better news that the cast are into the filming of S03 in the coming weeks! Bring. It. On. From the press release:
The second season of the internationally acclaimed Australian drama Wentworth will premiere May 20on Foxtel’s SoHo channel.
Fans around Australia, and around the globe, have been hanging out for news on season two and the date was announced by cast members Danielle Cormack and Nicole da Silva while accepting the award for Most Outstanding Australian Drama at the ASTRA Awards in Sydney last night.
Nicole was also on stage as the winner of the ASTRA Award for Most Outstanding Performance by an Actor – Female.
Wentworth draws on characters and elements of the iconic Prisoner series as it builds its own brave and bold, contemporary story.
The series debuted on SoHo last year and the first episode became the most watched non-sports program ever on Australian subscription television. Across the season, Wentworth reached 1.868 million unique viewers.
Wentworth has become an international success, first in New Zealand and then in the UK and has now been sold to more than 20 territories. A Dutch version is currently airing and a German version of Wentworth is in production.
For season two, the Wentworth story picks up three months after Bea Smith (Danielle Cormack) killed Jacs Holt. Liz Birdsworth (Celia Ireland), Doreen Anderson (Shareena Clanton) and Sue ‘Boomer’ Jenkins (Katrina Milosevic) are still serving time, and while Bea has been languishing in the slot, Franky Doyle (Nicole da Silva) has risen to the position of top dog unopposed.
The sudden arrival of new Governor Joan Ferguson (Pamela Rabe) is about to change all that.
Ferguson’s mandate is to clean up Wentworth and restore order at any cost to the inmates and her staff – Deputy Governor Vera Bennett (Kate Atkinson) and Corrections Officers Matthew ‘Fletch’ Fletcher (Aaron Jeffery) and Will Jackson (Robbie Magasiva).
Wentworth is a FremantleMedia Australia production for Foxtel and is distributed by FremantleMedia International.
