There’s not a whole lot you would normally expect from Week 29. If things were finishing they should have by now, and if they were starting they would have started by now. Not so – with at least four series finishing up this week (either for the season or entirely), it opens a few gaps that are yet to have their replacements announced. Add in that there’s a couple of new shows starting this week and while some supposed these new shows may fill the old gaps – not so.

One thing is for sure – the 6:30pm Sunday timeslot is going to be an interesting battle ahead.

The HMAS Hammersley sails off into the sunset this week as the final ever Sea Patrol goes to air Tuesday night on Channel 9. It’s helped reconnect Australia’s love with drama (even if this year the writing has seemed a little pedestrian) and encouraged networks to develop serialised drama again. Does the boat explode? Will The Captain get his girl? Will anybody care?

Such attempts at serialised drama has spawned the latest series on ABC1 this Thursday – Crownies. They’re young, hip, funky, sexy, recently-graduated lawyers and all working for the Department of Public Prosecutions. Do they have what it takes to separate themselves from the often emotional and still catch up for drinks after work?

What do you do with a series based in a school when the characters only have one more year/season to go before they graduate? Either entirely recast the show, change the focus on younger talent, or graduate with them. Not when you’re the most popular show to launch in the last two years… you start a nationwide talent hunt for a new cast member who’ll get a 6 episode arc in the show. Welcome to The Glee Project.
