A good idea or not? Aren’t we over signing shows? It shouldn’t matter that genre wunderkind Mark Burnett has delivered his latest format and the world is chewing it up – is it going to work in Australia? I’ll propose no, but I suspect my thoughts mean nothing. Channel 9 have been light on the reality content this year and while it may seem there’s a legislated number of hours each network has to meet (there’s not), they’ll add this to the stable. Who will host? Who will judge? Who will care? Take it as a given. From the press release:
Channel Nine, SHINE Australia and Talpa Productions today announce they are joining forces to find real music talent with hot new series from the US – THE VOICE – going into local production.
Currently a ratings smash hit in the US with more than 10 million viewers a week, THE VOICE is a vocal competition and will feature the same innovative format as its US counterpart – three stages of competition with a blind audition, battle rounds and finally the live shows, revealing Australia’s very best undiscovered artists, coached by four superstars.
During the blind auditions, if a coach is impressed, he/she pushes a button to select the artist for his/her team of competitors. At this point, the coach’s chair will swivel so that he/she can face the artist he/she has selected. If more than one coach selects the artist, the power shifts to the artist who may choose which coach he/she wants to work with throughout the competition. An artist is eliminated when he/she is not chosen by one of our coaches who are superstar music talents themselves.
Once the teams are set, the battle is on. Coaches will mentor the artists and make them over, and ultimately will transform their superlative voices to allow the singers to become star vocalists. To help them decide who they want to advance, the coaches will pit two of their own team members against each other to sing the same song in front of a studio audience. Based on this, the coaches will pick who they want to continue developing and who should go home.
In the final performance phase of the competition, the top artists from each team will compete against each other during a live broadcast. The television audience, together with the coaches, will vote to select who will move on from each team and who will be eliminated. Artists perform live with their coaches and other famous singers.
At last, each coach will have their best artist left standing to compete in the finale. From these four, one will be named “The Voice of Australia”.
Jeffrey Browne, Managing Director of Channel Nine, said: “We are very excited to bring this special television event to Australian audiences. The Voice will become must watch entertainment for the whole family.”
Mark Fennessy, CEO of SHINE Australia said: “”The Voice really is the next step in talent shows that’s got the world buzzing. It’s the real deal.. this show is all about the voice and not the looks”.
John de Mol, creator of the format and Executive Producer of ‘The Voice’ said: “The Voice is all about real and amazing singing talent. Only the best of the best is good enough to enter our Blind Audition. In the early stage of the show, if more than one coach is interested in an artist, the power shifts and the artist will choose their own star coach. That makes it very exciting. You could say that ‘The Voice of…’ starts where ‘Idol’ ends.”
THE VOICE is modelled on Holland’s top-rated vocal talent discovery show, “The Voice of Holland.” The VOICE US is hosted by Carson Daly, and features four musician coaches – Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton, who select and coach only the most talented vocalists.
“The Voice” is a co-production between SHINE Australia and Talpa Productions and will be seen on Channel Nine in the coming months.
When are auditions for the Australian show? Can you give any more details?

What are the details for sydney auditions please?
I’m from Australia and when the voice was aired in the US I would watch it weekly by live stream. To be honest I thought it would be terrible, but I gave the first episode a go and was hooked!
The talent is amazing, the concept is amazing and the judges are amazing!(especially Blake Shelton amd Cee-lo).
It’s unlike American idol, xfactor and australias got talent
The actually process of being eliminated is so bizzare and yet so much fun to watch that I asure you will love the voice as I did.
Oh and look out for Dia Frampton she was seriously amazing!!
Thanks Ken – except this series will be an Australian version of The Voice. We may see the US version here sometime, though.

I want to audition but cant seem to find where or when, I live in Brisbane on the Sunshine Coast
Unfortunately Heidi, you’ve missed the boat for this first series. All initall auditions were via uploading a video to The Voice Australia’s website and they chose who they wanted to audition from there. Enjoy the series in 2012 and keep an eye out for the audition details then.
Hi, i auditioned online a while ago and was just wondering whether those who don’t make it to the next round of auditions will still receive an email saying so? thanks, from SA 🙂
If the ads on TV are anything to go by then there is no way I will be watching the FAKE Delta carry on like a pork chop – what a drama queen
hi there, can u tell me if i am to late to audition for the voice?I did try early2011 no1 got back in touch with me! Please can some1 inform me the go now, when n where!! Thankyou
The show has completed the blind auditions, so I’d offer that your application wasn’t successful for the 2012 season. If you watch the show when it goes to air they’ll mention the audition process for the second season so pay attention! 🙂
Hey guys, i woud like to know when this starts? i’ve been waiting a while for it but im not sure the time and date, could someone please help me out? would mean alot.
thanks.
Hi Mikhayla, The Voice Australia starts next Sunday night at 6:30pm, and then runs also Mon/Tue.
Agree with Wendy about Delta G!!! Can anyone tell me if John Stephan will be appearing as I have heard rumors that he is taking part and I’ve been raving about him to anyone who’ll listen and so want them to see and hear him. Can’t imagine anyone who so has it all as this guy-absolutely world class.
Thanking you
i think that Mahalia Barnes and Chris Sebastian should not be allowed on the voice because they have family in the music business.
I agree anyone who is a pro: or family in the bussiness or had a kick start, should be refused entry,n left open4 strictly amateurs. That is if there just happens to be some1 involved who may believe in a fair go2 all!
When is the next the voice Australia Auditions?
No word yet, but expect to hear towards the end of the series.
When can kids audition in Sydney for The Voice kids?
Hi Julie – I don’t believe there’s plans for a “kids” The Voice. Yet.
Is there a children voice auditions??
Hi Dimi, No word on a children’s version of The Voice Australia – and highly unlikely too.
