A reboot that may or may not work, certainly not through lack of trying. Biggest change for Prime Suspect (apart from no Helen Mirren) is the move to a long form series as opposed to shorter miniseries. Also, it’s American. They never screw any remakes up. From the press release:

Prime Suspect, from the producers of Desperate Housewives and Friday Night Lights, makes its fast-tracked Australian premiere Wednesday, September 28, at 9.30pm on Channel Nine.

Derived from the critically acclaimed British television series of the same name and based on the best-selling Lynda LaPlante novels, Prime Suspect stars Maria Bello (ER, A History of Violence) as tough-as-nails homicide Detective Jane Timoney.

Timoney, recently transferred to Manhattan South Precinct and is keen to make her mark. She is confident and focused but also rude, abrupt and occasionally reckless. She has her vices, and rumours of a questionable past follow her everywhere – but she’s an instinctively brilliant cop who can’t be distracted from the only important thing about her job: finding the prime suspect.

Struggling to be accepted by the male-dominated precinct and determined to prove herself, Timoney has the wary support of her boss, Lieutenant Kevin Sweeney (Aidan Quinn, Unknown, Canterbury’s Law). However, the respect of her colleagues will be much harder to win, with the male detectives used to playing by their own rules. To them, serious detective work and bonding over whisky is a fraternal privilege and Timoney is an outsider.

After the unexpected death of a homicide investigator, Timoney decides to seize the opportunity to prove herself. She sets about taking over the case he was investigating: a housewife who was murdered in front of her two children.

As she deals with the brutal realities of inner-city crime, Timoney battles her squad’s misconceptions and balances her relationships with her ex-cop father (Peter Gerety, Blue Bloods) and long-term boyfriend. Her natural talent and never-say-die attitude may see her become a rising star in a job she loves. But will it cost her more than she is prepared to sacrifice?
