Sunday, 2 November at 8.30pm on SBS ONE
To commemorate the life and time of Australia’s twenty-first prime minister, Gough Whitlam, SBS will pay tribute by airing his final ever television interview on Sunday, 2 November at 8.30pm on SBS ONE. Filmed in 2002, Gough Whitlam: In His Own Words is a one-on-one interview in which he speaks candidly with Labor Senator, John Faulkner.
Gough Whitlam: In His Own Words documents Whitlam’s early parliamentary life, his role in the 1960s and 1970s as Labor’s Deputy Leader and Leader, and taking the ALP to power after a record twenty-three years of Liberal government.
The program explores the remarkable achievements of his three short years in government including the end of conscription, recognising China and re-opening the case of equal pay for women.
The documentary also examines the Whitlam government’s economic credentials and performance, asks questions about Gough Whitlam’s role in the Indonesian invasion of East Timor and the competence of his ministers, and his tactics on the day of his government’s dramatic dismissal by Governor-General Sir John Kerr on Remembrance Day, 1975.
